BUTLER, Pa. — Former President Donald Trump was the target of an assassination attempt on Saturday when a gunman opened fire at a rally approximately 30 miles north of Pittsburgh.The U.S. Secret Service reported that one person was killed, and two others were critically wounded in the shooting. All victims were adult males, according to law enforcement officials at a news conference. The gunman was shot and killed by the Secret Service. Trump was quickly escorted off stage, and the rally was promptly ended.
Early Sunday, the FBI identified the shooter as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pa., located about 40 miles south of Butler. Lt. Col. George Bivens of the Pennsylvania State Police stated at a late Saturday news conference that it would take some time to conclusively determine whether Crooks acted alone.
The identities of the victims have been confirmed, and their families have been notified,but their names are not being released at this time.
Bivens said that the Pennsylvania State Police will lead the investigation into the homicide and related aspects, while the FBI will handle the "attempted assassination" probe. He emphasized that there is no indication of any additional threat. In a post on Truth Social, Trump expressed his gratitude to the agents who protected him and extended his condolences to the families of the victims. He recounted being shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of his right ear, describing the immediate realization of what had occurred due to the whizzing sound and the sensation of the bullet tearing through his skin.Steven Cheung, the Trump campaign's communication director, confirmed that Trump was checked at a local medical facility and is fine.
Despite the incident, the Trump campaign and the RNC announced that the Republican National Convention would proceed as planned in Milwaukee, Wis., starting on Monday. Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesman for the U.S. Secret Service, stated that around 6:15 p.m. ET, a suspected shooter fired multiple shots from an elevated position outside the rally venue. Secret Service agents neutralized the shooter. The statement noted that one spectator was killed, and two others were critically injured. President Biden condemned the violence, calling it "sick" and stating that such acts have no place in America. He spoke from Delaware and mentioned that he had communicated with Trump. Biden is expected to return to Washington for further briefings from homeland security and law enforcement officials.
In response to the incident, the Biden campaign announced a pause on all outbound communications and an effort to pull down its television ads as swiftly as possible.
Chris Takach, a rally attendee, described the chaotic scene to Oliver Morrison, a reporter for NPR member station WESA. Takach recounted hearing shots, seeing ammunition hit metal, and witnessing a hydraulic line on a speaker tower collapse, after which everyone hit the ground as police converged on the area near Trump.
